Nothing. No motor, maybe no lights. A Shark vacuum not turning on usually has a power, battery or heat problem, and the lights on your model tell you which one. Start by working out which Shark family you own.
Quick answer: A Shark vacuum that won’t turn on usually has no power reaching it, a flat or loose battery, a floorhead or wand that isn’t connected properly, or a motor thermostat that hasn’t cooled yet. Check the outlet or charge, reattach the wand and floor nozzle, and give it the full cool-down time for your model.
| What you see | Likely cause | Try this first | Part if it keeps happening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rotator (NV600): no brushroll light | Vacuum is off | Press power, then select Carpet or Hard Floor mode | — |
| Corded Shark dead after it overheated | Thermostat hasn’t reset | Unplug, clear blockages, wait the full cool-down | Filters |
| Stratos or Vertex cordless: floor nozzle headlights off | Connection issue | Disconnect and reattach handheld, wand and nozzle | — |
| Vertex cordless: bottom battery light flashing | Battery needs charging | Switch off, then charge | Battery (OEM) |
| WandVac (WV200): no light | Off, or needs recharging | Charge on its base | Charger (Shark part) |
| WandVac (WV200): blue light blinks twice, then pauses | Blockage | Switch off, clear it, switch on | — |

Safety note: Unplug your Shark, or switch off a cordless model, before you detach the wand, floor nozzle or dust cup. If the battery is swollen, leaking, very hot or smells odd, stop. Don’t charge it, and call Shark before you do anything else.
First, Know Which Shark You Have
The fix depends on the model family. Here’s where Shark puts the label on three common families:
- Rotator (NV600 series): the model number is on the rating label on the back of the vacuum. The date code is on one of the power-cord plug prongs.
- Stratos upright (AZ3000 series): a QR code label on the bottom of the back of the vacuum pod.
- Vertex cordless (IZ440 / IZ460 series): a QR code label on the bottom of the back of the handheld vacuum, and on the battery.
Other families: your owner’s guide shows where the label is.
Three Quick Checks
Corded models: test the outlet
Plug a lamp into the same outlet. If it’s dead too, check your breaker and any GFCI outlet in the room. If the lamp works, keep going.
Rotator: press power, then pick a mode
On a Rotator (NV600), no brushroll light means the vacuum is off. Press the power button and select Carpet or Hard Floor mode to turn it on.
Cordless models: reattach everything
On Stratos cordless and Vertex cordless models, floor nozzle headlights that stay off point to a connection problem. Disconnect the handheld, wand and floor nozzle, then reattach them until each one clicks. If that fixed it, you’re done.
Why Your Shark Won’t Power On
The motor thermostat hasn’t reset yet
If your Shark died after a long clean or a clog, the motor-protective thermostat may have switched it off. It won’t start again until it has cooled.
How to tell: It stopped mid-clean, then refused to restart. It may still feel warm.
How to fix it:
- Switch off and unplug it.
- Empty the dust cup and clean the filters.
- Check the hose, accessories and inlet openings for blockages.
- Wait the full cool-down for your family. Shark’s guides list between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the model, and 45 minutes for the Stratos and Vertex cordless (unit and battery).
If that doesn’t fix it: See the full cool-down table in [LINK: Shark Vacuum Keeps Turning Off — /shark-vacuum-keeps-turning-off/]. If it still won’t start, call Shark customer service at 1-800-798-7398.
The battery is flat (cordless)
A cordless Shark won’t start with an empty battery, and the lights tell you more than you’d expect.
How to tell:
- Vertex cordless (IZ440/IZ460): the bottom battery light flashes when the battery needs charging.
- Stratos cordless (IZ800): while charging, the battery light pulses yellow from 0–75%, green from 76–99% and white at 100%. No light means the battery pack is off.
- WandVac (WV200): a blinking blue light means low battery. No light means it’s off or needs recharging.
How to fix it:
- Switch off before you connect the charger.
- Charge in a room between 40°F and 104°F. That’s the range in Shark’s guides for the Stratos and Vertex cordless.
- Give it a full charge. Shark’s guides list about 3.5 hours for the Stratos cordless, about 3 hours for the Vertex cordless and about 2.5 hours for the WandVac WV200.
If that doesn’t fix it: If it never shows a charging light, read [LINK: Shark Cordless Vacuum Not Charging].
The battery isn’t seated (removable-battery models)
Some Shark cordless models have a removable battery. A battery that isn’t fully clicked in can leave the vacuum dead.
How to tell: You recently removed the battery, or the vacuum was dropped.
How to fix it:
- Stratos cordless (IZ800): press and hold the Battery Release Button, pull the battery out, then push it back until it clicks.
- Vertex IZ462H / QZ462HQ: press and hold the Battery Release Button, slide the battery out, then refit it firmly.
- Vertex IZ440H / IZ441H: the battery isn’t removable, so skip this step.
If that doesn’t fix it: Clean the metal contacts with a dry cloth and charge again.
The handheld, wand or floor nozzle isn’t connected
On Stratos cordless and Vertex cordless models, Shark’s guides treat dark floor nozzle headlights as a connection issue.
How to tell: The floor nozzle headlights stay off.
How to fix it: Disconnect the handheld, wand and floor nozzle, then reattach them firmly.
If that doesn’t fix it: Shark’s guides say to contact Shark customer service at 1-800-798-7398.
A blockage has stopped the WandVac
The WandVac (WV200) uses its light to flag a blockage.
How to tell: The blue light blinks twice, then pauses.
How to fix it: Turn off the power, remove the blockage, then turn it back on.
If that doesn’t fix it: Empty the dust cup and check the filter. See [LINK: Shark Vacuum Losing Suction].
The charger or outlet isn’t working
If the battery never gets a charge, the vacuum can’t start.
How to tell: No charging light at all, on any outlet.
How to fix it:
- Try a different outlet. Shark’s WandVac guide lists this as a fix.
- Check the charger cable for damage.
- Use only the Shark charger listed for your model. The Vertex cordless guide names charger DK33-288080H-U. The WandVac WV200 guide lists charger part number 1076FI200.
If that doesn’t fix it: The charger may need replacing. See [LINK: Shark Cordless Vacuum Not Charging].
The battery has worn out or been damaged
Lithium batteries don’t last forever. Shark’s WandVac guide lists a damaged battery as one reason the vacuum won’t operate.
How to tell: It charges normally but won’t run, or runs only briefly. The battery may be several years old.
How to fix it: Stop using a battery that’s swollen, leaking or hot. Don’t open it.
If that doesn’t fix it: Replace it with the official Shark battery for your exact model. For the Vertex IZ462H, the Vertex guide says to use only battery pack XSBT750. Shark’s parts page lists XSBT750 for the IZ462H, IZ462HNP, IZ482H, IZ483H, IZ464H and IZ492H. For other models, see [LINK: Shark cordless battery replacement].

Repair or Replace Your Shark?
Repair makes sense if:
- the fix was a reset, a reconnect or a charge
- only the battery or charger has failed, and Shark still sells the part for your model
- the vacuum is fairly new, so check your Shark warranty first
Replace makes sense if:
- it smelled burnt or made grinding noises before it died
- the battery is dead and suction had been weak for a while
- the battery for your model is no longer sold
- several things are failing at once

FAQ
Why won’t my Shark vacuum turn on?
The usual reasons are no power at the outlet, a flat or loose battery, a wand or floor nozzle that isn’t connected, or a thermostat that hasn’t cooled after overheating. The lights on your model family point to which one.
Where is the model number on my Shark vacuum?
It depends on the family. On a Rotator NV600, it’s on the rating label on the back. On a Stratos upright AZ3000, there’s a QR label on the bottom of the back of the pod. On a Vertex cordless, the QR label is on the bottom of the back of the handheld and on the battery.
Can I replace the battery in my Shark Vertex?
On the IZ462H and QZ462HQ, yes. The battery is removable, and Shark’s guide says to use battery pack XSBT750. On the IZ440H and IZ441H, the battery isn’t removable.
What do the blue lights on a Shark WandVac mean?
Solid blue means it’s on, blinking blue means low battery, two blinks and a pause means a blockage, a fading light means it’s charging, and a dim light means it’s fully charged.
The Bottom Line
Read your Shark’s lights first: they usually tell you whether it’s power, battery, connection or heat. Reconnect, charge and give it the full cool-down. If a charged, connected, cool Shark still won’t start, call Shark at 1-800-798-7398 before you buy anything.
