Dyson Vacuum Pulsing? What It Means and How to Fix It

The motor surges, drops, surges again. A Dyson vacuum pulsing like this usually isn’t broken. Dyson’s manuals say the motor pulses when there’s a blockage. Find what’s restricting the air and the pulsing usually stops.

Quick answer: A pulsing Dyson is usually telling you the airflow is blocked. Dyson’s own list of causes is short: a blockage in the wand, cleaner head or bin, a filter that needs washing, or a dirty cyclone. Clear the airway, wash the filter, let it dry for 24 hours, then try again.

Safety note: Take your Dyson off the charger and let it cool before you look for a blockage. Don’t pull the trigger while your hands are in the bin, wand or cleaner head, and watch for sharp objects caught inside. Never dry a filter in a tumble dryer or near an open flame.

What Dyson Means by “Pulsing”

Dyson’s manuals tie pulsing to blockages. The V8 manual says the motor pulses when there’s a blockage. The V11 (SV15) manual says the motor pulses and the screen shows a blockage. The V8 Cyclone won’t run at all until the blockage is cleared.

On a V8, repeated pulsing can trip the automatic cut-out. If that happens, the machine goes quiet until it cools, which can look like a dead vacuum. [LINK: Dyson Vacuum Not Turning On — /dyson/dyson-vacuum-not-turning-on/] covers that side of it.

Read the Screen or Lights First

V11 and V15 Detect

The screen tells you which problem it is. A blockage alert means the machine has detected a blockage. A filter wash alert means the filter needs cleaning, and a filter attachment alert means it isn’t fitted correctly.

Cyclone V10

The blockage light means a blockage. A solid filter light means the filter needs washing; a flashing one means it isn’t fitted correctly.

V8

Dyson’s V8 light table doesn’t include a blockage light. If a V8 pulses, go straight to the blockage steps below.

How to Stop Your Dyson Pulsing

A blockage in the wand, cleaner head or bin

This is the cause Dyson names first on every model. A sock, a hair tie or a wad of debris is enough.

How to tell: A blockage alert or light, or pulsing that started right after you picked up something large.

How to fix it:

  1. Take it off the charger and let it cool.
  2. Empty the bin and check it, the cyclone and the point where the wand or tool attaches.
  3. Remove the wand and cleaner head. Look through both ends of the wand.
  4. Turn the cleaner head over and check the brush bar and the air inlet.
  5. If the brush bar is jammed, use a coin to release its fastener, slide it out, clear it, then refit it and tighten the fastener. Dyson’s V8 and V11 manuals show this step.
  6. Refit every part before you switch on again.

If that doesn’t fix it: Check the bin inlet (V8), then the filter.

The bin inlet is stuck (V8)

Dyson’s V8 support page lists a stuck bin inlet as its own cause of pulsing.

How to tell: The wand and cleaner head are clear, but the V8 still pulses.

How to fix it: Remove the bin and clear any blockage from the bin inlet.

If that doesn’t fix it: Wash the filter next.

The filter needs washing

A clogged filter restricts airflow just like a blockage. Dyson lists it as a cause of pulsing on the V8, Cyclone V10, V11 and V15 Detect.

How to tell: A filter light or filter wash alert, or it’s been more than a month since you washed it.

How to fix it:

  1. Wash the filter. The V8 manual says cold water only. On the V8 Cyclone, rinse it until the water runs clear, then squeeze out the water.
  2. Let it dry for at least 24 hours somewhere dry with good airflow. No tumble dryer, no open flame.
  3. Refit it only when it’s completely dry, and push it fully home.

Dyson recommends washing the filter once a month. The V8 and V11 manuals say to wash it more often if you vacuum fine dust or mostly use the highest power mode.

If that doesn’t fix it: A filter that won’t come clean after washing may need replacing. See [LINK: Dyson Filter Cleaning — /dyson/dyson-filter-cleaning/].

The filter isn’t fitted correctly

A filter that’s slightly out of place can trigger a warning.

How to tell: A flashing filter light on a Cyclone V10, or a filter attachment alert on a V11 or V15 Detect.

How to fix it: Remove the filter and refit it until it’s fully seated.

If that doesn’t fix it: Check the filter for damage, and clean the cyclone.

The cyclone is dirty

On the Cyclone V10, V11 and V15 Detect, Dyson lists a dirty cyclone as a cause of pulsing.

How to tell: Filters are clean, nothing is blocked, and dust has built up on the cyclone.

How to fix it: Remove the bin and clean the cyclone with a microfiber cloth.

If that doesn’t fix it: See the owner reports below, then contact Dyson.

When It Pulses on Eco but Not Boost

Many V11 owners, including V11 Outsize owners, report the same pattern on Dyson’s community forum. The machine pulses on Eco and Med but runs fine on Boost. Some say it kept pulsing after a new filter, a full clean and even a new battery.

Dyson doesn’t publish a separate explanation for this pattern. Work through the blockage, filter and cyclone checks above first. If it still pulses, call the Dyson Helpline at 1-855-533-1098 (Mon–Fri 8am–8pm CT, Sat 9am–6pm CT) before you buy a battery.

Parts that commonly fix this problem:

  • Dyson filter for your model — if the filter won’t come clean, or the filter alert returns soon after washing. [LINK: Dyson Filter Cleaning — /dyson/dyson-filter-cleaning/]

Pulsing is often fixed with no part at all. For a full clean of the bin and cyclone, see [LINK: How to Clean a Dyson Vacuum — /dyson/how-to-clean-a-dyson-vacuum/].

Repair or Replace Your Dyson?

Repair makes sense if:

  • clearing a blockage, washing the filter or cleaning the cyclone stopped the pulsing
  • the filter is worn and Dyson sells it for your model
  • it’s still under warranty: the V11 (SV15) manual lists 2 years of parts and labor, excluding filters

Note that Dyson’s V8 and V11 manuals say clearing blockages isn’t covered by the warranty. So it’s a job to do yourself.

Replace makes sense if:

  • it keeps pulsing on a clean, clear machine and Dyson can’t fix it under warranty
  • suction is weak and the battery runtime is short at the same time
  • other faults are showing up too

FAQ

Why is my Dyson pulsing?

Dyson’s manuals say the motor pulses when there’s a blockage. The usual causes are a blockage in the wand, cleaner head or bin, a filter that needs washing, or a dirty cyclone. On a V8, also check the bin inlet.

Why does my Dyson keep cutting out?

On a V8, repeated pulsing can trip the automatic cut-out, so the machine stops until it cools. Clear the blockage, let it cool, and try again.

Do I need to let my Dyson filter dry before refitting it?

Yes. Dyson’s manuals say to let it dry for at least 24 hours, and the V8 Cyclone manual says it must be completely dry before you refit it.

How often should I wash my Dyson filter?

Dyson’s support pages say once a month. Wash it sooner if the filter light or alert comes on, or if you vacuum a lot of fine dust.

The Short Answer

Pulsing is your Dyson asking for air. Clear the wand, cleaner head and bin, wash and fully dry the filter, and wipe the cyclone. That’s often all it takes. If a clean, clear machine still pulses, call Dyson before you spend money.
