Short runtime is the usual reason people start looking for a Dyson battery replacement. Before you order one, two things matter: whether the battery is really the problem, and which of Dyson’s batteries your machine takes. Dyson uses different packs across the V8, V10, V11 and V15, and two V11 versions take different batteries.
Quick answer: Replace your Dyson battery when runtime has dropped outside MAX mode and the filter, cyclone and power mode are ruled out. Dyson’s parts pages list battery 969352-03 for the Cyclone V10, 970938-01 for click-in V11 and V15 Detect models, and 974815-01 for the V8. Use Dyson’s battery finder for your V8’s serial number.
Is It Really the Battery?
Dyson’s support pages give four reasons for short runtime on the Cyclone V10, V11 and V15 Detect. Only one of them is the battery.
| What you notice | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime is short and you mostly clean in MAX or Boost | Power mode | Use the right mode for the task; it’s not a battery fault |
| Runtime has dropped and the filter hasn’t been washed in a month | Clogged filter | Wash it, dry it for 24 hours, retest |
| Runtime has dropped and the cyclone is dusty | Dirty cyclone | Clean it with a microfiber cloth, retest |
| Runtime has dropped outside MAX mode, everything else is clean | Worn battery | Replace with the official Dyson battery |
| V8 or Cyclone V10: one flashing red light | Battery fault | Contact Dyson; replace with the official battery |
| No charging lights at all | Often the charger, not the battery | See [LINK: Dyson Not Charging — /dyson/dyson-not-charging/] |

For a sense of scale, Dyson’s V8 manual lists up to 40 minutes in standard mode and up to 7 minutes in Max mode. A V8 that falls well short of that outside Max mode is a battery candidate.
Safety note: Switch the machine off and take it off the charger before you remove the battery. If the battery casing is cracked or damaged, don’t use it and don’t charge it; call Dyson. Never open a battery pack.
Which Dyson Battery Fits Your Machine
First, check how your battery attaches. Look where the handle meets the battery. Dyson’s part page says: “If there is a large red button that releases your battery then your machine will need the click-in battery.” No red button means a screw-in battery.
| Your Dyson | Battery type | Official Dyson battery (Part No.) | Charger (Part No.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| V8 (pinch or star pre-filter) | Use Dyson’s V8 battery finder | 974815-01 listed on both US V8 parts pages | 967813-02 |
| Cyclone V10 | — | 969352-03 | 969350-02 |
| V11 with red release button (LCD or LED screen), V11 Outsize | Click-in | 970938-01 | 969350-02 |
| V11 without red release button (LCD screen) | Screw-in | 970145-06 (see note below) | 969350-02 |
| V15 Detect, V15s Detect Submarine | Click-in | 970938-01 | 969350-02 |

V8 owners: Dyson says the V8 range “is compatible with three separate batteries.” Its V8 battery finder sorts them by the first three characters of your serial number. The serial number is on the bottom of the battery or underneath the machine. Check it there before you buy.
V11 screw-in owners: when we checked in October 2026, Dyson’s page for the screw-in V11 battery said “We no longer sell this item.” Check Dyson’s site or call the Dyson Helpline at 1-855-533-1098 before you plan around a new battery.

How to Swap It
Dyson’s battery pages show the swap in a short video for each model. Your machine may look a little different from the one shown, but the process is the same.
Click-in batteries (V11 with red button, V11 Outsize, V15 Detect)
- Switch the machine off.
- Press the large red button where the handle meets the battery to release it.
- Fit the new 970938-01 battery until it’s secure.
- Charge it fully before you use it.
V8, Cyclone V10 and screw-in V11
- Switch the machine off and take it off the charger.
- Follow the video on Dyson’s battery page for your model. On a screw-in V11, the battery is fastened with screws, as the name says, so have a screwdriver ready.
- Charge the new battery fully before use. The V8 manual lists about 5 hours.
Charge in a room between 50°F and 86°F (10°C to 30°C). That’s the range in Dyson’s V8 and V11 (SV15) manuals.
Mistakes That Waste a New Battery
- Buying before ruling out the filter and cyclone. Dyson lists both as reasons for short runtime.
- Judging runtime in MAX or Boost mode. Dyson’s own battery-wear sign is reduced runtime when not in MAX mode.
- Ordering by model name alone. V11 batteries split into click-in and screw-in, and V8 batteries go by serial number.
- Charging in a cold garage. Below 50°F (10°C), the V8 and V11 (SV15) switch off.
- Blaming the battery for a charger fault. On a V8 or Cyclone V10, red and blue flashing together means the charger.
- Throwing the old pack in the trash. Take lithium-ion batteries to a battery recycling drop-off.
Choosing the Right Replacement
Start with the official Dyson battery for your machine. Dyson recommends genuine parts so the machine works as intended and the guarantee stays valid. Its parts come with a 1-year warranty, starting on the purchase date (or delivery date, if later).
Official Dyson batteries and chargers:
- V8: battery 974815-01 (confirm with the V8 battery finder) · charger 967813-02
- Cyclone V10: battery 969352-03 · charger 969350-02
- V11 click-in, V11 Outsize, V15 Detect: click-in battery 970938-01 · charger 969350-02
Still under your machine’s warranty? Call Dyson first. The V11 (SV15) manual lists 2 years of parts and labor, excluding filters.
For filters, docks and other parts, see [LINK: Dyson Vacuum Parts — /dyson/dyson-vacuum-parts/].
Third-party batteries are sold for most Dyson models. If you consider one, make sure it names your exact model and battery type, and avoid cheap, no-name lithium packs.
Is a New Battery Worth It?
A new battery makes sense if:
- suction is strong and only runtime has dropped
- Dyson still sells the battery for your model
- the rest of the machine works well
A new vacuum may make more sense if:
- suction is weak too, even with a clean filter and cyclone
- you have a screw-in V11 and the battery is no longer sold
- the machine shows other faults, such as a solid red main body light ([LINK: Dyson Vacuum Not Turning On — /dyson/dyson-vacuum-not-turning-on/])

FAQ
How do I know if my Dyson battery needs replacing?
Dyson’s battery pages point to reduced runtime when you’re not in MAX mode. Rule out a dirty filter and cyclone first. On a V8 or Cyclone V10, one flashing red light means a battery fault.
Is the V11 battery the same as the V15 battery?
For click-in V11 models, yes. Dyson lists click-in battery 970938-01 for the V11, V11 Outsize, V15 Detect and V15s Detect Submarine. Screw-in V11 models take a different battery.
How do I know which V8 battery I need?
Use Dyson’s V8 battery finder. It matches the first three characters of your serial number, found on the bottom of the battery or underneath the machine, to the right battery.
Do I need a new charger too?
Not usually. Dyson lists charger 969350-02 for the Cyclone V10, V11, V12 Detect Slim and V15 Detect, so one charger covers many models. Replace it only if it shows a charger fault.
Bottom Line
Rule out the filter, cyclone and power mode, then check whether your Dyson has a red release button. That tells you click-in or screw-in, and the parts table above gives you the official battery. If suction is weak too, or your V11 screw-in battery isn’t sold anymore, look at replacing the machine instead.
