You put your Dyson on charge and the lights don’t do what you expect. Before you assume it’s dead, read them: on several models, no lights on the charger simply means the battery is full. When a Dyson is not charging for real, the lights usually tell you whether it’s the charger, the battery or the room.
Quick answer: A Dyson that won’t charge usually has a cold battery, a faulty charger or a battery fault. On a V8 or Cyclone V10, red and blue flashing together means a charger fault and one flashing red light means a battery fault. Charge in a warm room, plug the charger straight into the machine, then check the lights.
| What you see | Likely cause | Try this first | Part if it keeps happening |
|---|---|---|---|
| V8 or Cyclone V10 on charge: no lights | Fully charged (on standby) | Take it off and try it | — |
| V8 or Cyclone V10: red and blue flashing together | Charger fault | Try another outlet; charge without the dock | Dyson charger |
| V8 or Cyclone V10: one flashing red light | Battery fault | Contact Dyson | Dyson battery |
| V8 or V11 (SV15): won’t charge in a cold garage or car | Below 50°F (10°C) | Charge in a warm room | — |
| Charges, but runtime is short | Power mode, filter or cyclone | Use the right mode, wash the filter, clean the cyclone | Dyson battery, if all else is clean |
| Battery casing cracked or damaged | Damaged battery | Stop using it; call Dyson | Dyson battery |

Safety note: Don’t charge a Dyson whose battery casing is cracked or damaged. Stop using it and call Dyson. Use only the Dyson charger for your model, and check the cable for damage before you plug it in.
Read the Charging Lights First
V8 and Cyclone V10
While charging, the battery lights count up:
- one blue flashing light: charging, low charge
- one solid blue light and one flashing blue light: charging, medium charge
- two solid blue lights and one flashing blue light: charging, nearly full
- no lights: fully charged (Dyson’s V8 page says “Charged, on standby”)
So a V8 or Cyclone V10 sitting on the charger with no lights may be full, not broken. Take it off and try it.
V11 (SV15)
The blue LEDs on either side of the battery flash while it charges. When it’s full, both LEDs stay lit for 5 seconds. On the V11 and V15 Detect, a battery alert on the screen means the machine needs charging.
V8 Cyclone
The battery LED pulses blue while charging and goes out when it’s fully charged.
Why Your Dyson Won’t Charge
The room is too cold
Dyson’s batteries won’t charge outside their temperature range. This catches out anyone who keeps a stick vacuum in a garage.
How to tell: The machine has been somewhere cold, or charging stopped when the temperature dropped.
How to fix it: Bring it indoors and charge it there. Dyson’s V8 and V11 (SV15) manuals list 50°F to 86°F (10°C to 30°C) for operating and charging. The V8 Cyclone won’t operate or charge below 41°F (5°C).
If that doesn’t fix it: Check the charger next.
The charger or dock is the problem
A faulty charger means the battery never fills. Dyson gives it its own light pattern on the V8 and Cyclone V10.
How to tell: Red and blue lights flash together. Or there are no lights at all on a battery you know is low.
How to fix it:
- Plug into a different wall outlet.
- Check the charger cable for damage. Don’t use a damaged one.
- Take the dock out of the picture. Dyson says charger 969350-02 “charges your vacuum with or without the Wall Dok™”, and its support pages say to charge “on the dock or at the socket”. Plug the charger straight into the machine.
- Use only the Dyson charger for your model.
If that doesn’t fix it: Replace the charger with the official one. Dyson lists 969350-02 for the Cyclone V10, V11, V11 Outsize, V12 Detect Slim and V15 Detect, and 967813-02 for the V8.
The battery has a fault
Sometimes the charger is fine and the battery itself has failed.
How to tell: On a V8 or Cyclone V10, one flashing red light means a battery fault.
How to fix it: Stop charging it if the casing is cracked or damaged. Otherwise, contact Dyson before you buy anything, especially if the machine is still under warranty.
If that doesn’t fix it: Replace it with the official Dyson battery. See [LINK: Dyson Battery Replacement — /dyson/dyson-battery-replacement/].
It just ran flat and is still warm (V8)
Dyson’s V8 manual says to let the machine cool for a few minutes after a full discharge before you recharge it.
How to tell: You ran the battery down completely and put it straight on the charger.
How to fix it: Wait a few minutes, then put it back on charge. A full V8 charge takes about 5 hours; the V8 Cyclone about 4 hours.
If that doesn’t fix it: Check the charger and battery causes above.
It charges, but won’t hold the charge
If the lights look normal but the battery runs out fast, it may not be a charging problem at all. Dyson’s support pages for the Cyclone V10, V11 and V15 Detect list four causes of short runtime.
How to tell: Charging lights behave normally, but runtime is short.
How to fix it:
- Use the right power mode for the task. MAX or Boost drains the battery fastest.
- Wash the filter. Dyson recommends once a month.
- Remove the bin and clean the cyclone with a microfiber cloth.
If that doesn’t fix it: Dyson’s fourth cause is a battery that needs replacing. Its battery pages point to reduced runtime when you’re not in MAX mode. See [LINK: Dyson Battery Replacement — /dyson/dyson-battery-replacement/].

Parts that commonly fix this problem:
- Official Dyson charger — if red and blue flash together, or nothing charges on any outlet without the dock. 969350-02 (Cyclone V10, V11, V15 Detect) or 967813-02 (V8).
- Official Dyson battery — if a V8 or Cyclone V10 shows one flashing red light, or runtime stays short after the filter and cyclone are clean. [LINK: Dyson Battery Replacement — /dyson/dyson-battery-replacement/]
Repair or Replace Your Dyson?
Repair makes sense if:
- a warm room, another outlet or a new charger fixed it
- only the battery has failed, and Dyson still sells it for your model
- it’s under warranty: the V11 (SV15) manual lists 2 years of parts and labor, excluding filters, and Dyson spare parts carry a 1-year warranty
Replace makes sense if:
- the battery has failed and suction is weak too
- your model’s battery is no longer sold
- the machine also shows a solid red main body light

FAQ
Why is my Dyson flashing blue and not charging?
One flashing blue light on a V8 or Cyclone V10 means it’s charging with a low charge, so it may be working normally. Off the charger, the same light means the battery is empty. Leave it on charge and watch for more lights.
Why is my Dyson flashing red and blue?
On a V8 or Cyclone V10, a red light and a blue light flashing together means a charger fault. Try another outlet and charge without the dock. If it continues, replace the charger with the official Dyson part.
Why does my Dyson show no lights when charging?
On a V8 or Cyclone V10, no lights on the charger means it’s fully charged. Take it off and try it. If it won’t run, check the charger and battery steps above.
Can I charge my Dyson without the dock?
Yes. Dyson says its 969350-02 charger charges the vacuum with or without the Wall Dok, and its support pages say to charge on the dock or at the socket.
What to Do Next
Read the lights before anything else: no lights can mean full, red and blue means the charger, and one red means the battery. Warm the machine up, plug the charger straight in, and only then decide between a charger and a battery. Call Dyson at 1-855-533-1098 if you’re unsure, especially under warranty.
