Dyson V15 or V11 Screen Error? What Each Alert Means and How to Clear It

An icon pops up on your Dyson’s screen and the machine won’t behave. On the V15 Detect and the V11, the screen is the machine telling you exactly what it wants. Dyson’s support pages list four alerts for both models, and each has a short, specific fix.

Quick answer: A Dyson V15 or V11 screen alert is usually one of four things: a blockage, a filter that needs washing, a filter that isn’t fitted correctly, or a battery that needs charging. Clear the airway, wash and fully dry the filter, refit it until it clicks, or charge the battery.

Safety note: Switch off your Dyson and take it off the charger before you remove the bin, filter or cleaner head. Don’t pull the trigger while you check for blockages, and watch for sharp objects. Never refit a damp filter.

Read the Alert First

Dyson’s support pages for the V11 (screw-in and click-in) and the V15 Detect list the same four alerts:

  • Battery alert: your machine needs charging.
  • Blockage alert: your machine has detected a blockage.
  • Filter attachment alert: your filter is not fitted correctly.
  • Filter wash alert: your filter needs cleaning.

Match the icon to one of these, then jump to its fix below.

How to Clear Each Dyson Screen Alert

Blockage alert

On the V11, Dyson’s manual says the motor pulses and the screen shows a blockage at the same time. Dyson’s “jammed or blocked” FAQ for both models also lists a filter that needs washing, a bin past its MAX line, and clogged tools.

How to tell: The blockage alert is on and the motor surges and drops.

How to fix it:

  1. Take it off the charger and let it cool.
  2. Remove the clear bin and clear any blockage. Empty the bin if dirt is past the MAX fill line.
  3. Check the wand and tools for anything stuck.
  4. If the cleaner head is blocked, use a coin to release the brush bar fastener, slide the brush bar out, clear it, then refit it and tighten the fastener.
  5. Refit every part before you switch on.

If that doesn’t fix it: Wash the filter, then see [LINK: Dyson Vacuum Pulsing — /dyson/dyson-vacuum-pulsing/].

Filter wash alert

The filter is clogged enough that the machine is asking for a wash.

How to tell: The filter wash alert is on, and suction may feel weaker.

How to fix it:

  1. Turn the filter counterclockwise and pull it away. Tap off loose dust.
  2. Wash it the way Dyson says for your model. On the V11: cold water only, no detergent. On the V15 Detect: warm running tap water.
  3. Let it dry for at least 24 hours with good airflow, until it’s completely dry.
  4. Turn it clockwise until it clicks into place.

Dyson recommends washing the filter once a month. It says to wash more often if you vacuum a lot of fine dust, or mostly use Eco or Auto/Medium mode on the V11, or Boost mode on the V15 Detect.

If that doesn’t fix it: If the filter won’t come clean or is damaged, replace it. Full steps: [LINK: Dyson Filter Cleaning — /dyson/dyson-filter-cleaning/].

Filter attachment alert

This alert can appear after you’ve removed and refitted the filter.

How to tell: The filter attachment alert appears after you’ve removed or refitted the filter.

How to fix it: Take the filter out and refit it, turning it clockwise until it clicks into place. Make sure it’s completely dry first.

If that doesn’t fix it: Check the filter for damage, and contact Dyson.

Battery alert

The machine needs a charge.

How to tell: The battery alert is on. On the V11 (SV15), Dyson’s manual describes a low run time icon first, then a final warning icon when the battery is empty.

How to fix it:

  1. Charge it on the dock or with the charger plugged straight into the machine.
  2. Watch the battery: on the V11 (SV15), the blue LEDs on either side of the battery flash while charging, and both stay lit for 5 seconds when it’s full.
  3. Charge in a room between 50°F and 86°F (10°C to 30°C), the range in Dyson’s V11 (SV15) manual.

If that doesn’t fix it: If it won’t charge, read [LINK: Dyson Not Charging — /dyson/dyson-not-charging/]. If it charges but runs out fast, Dyson lists the power mode, the filter, the cyclone and the battery as causes: see [LINK: Dyson Battery Replacement — /dyson/dyson-battery-replacement/].

When the Screen Stays Blank

No alert at all, and no power? Dyson’s support pages for the V11 and V15 Detect list four causes: the battery has run out, the battery needs replacing, the main body is faulty, or the charger is faulty. Work through them in [LINK: Dyson Vacuum Not Turning On — /dyson/dyson-vacuum-not-turning-on/].

Parts that commonly fix these alerts:

  • Dyson filter 970013-02 (V11 LCD screen and V15 Detect) — if the filter wash alert keeps returning and the filter won’t come clean. The V15 Detect also lists a HEPA filter, 972126-01.
  • Click-in battery 970938-01 (V11 click-in, V11 Outsize, V15 Detect) — if the battery alert comes back fast after a full charge and the filter and cyclone are clean. [LINK: Dyson Battery Replacement — /dyson/dyson-battery-replacement/]
  • Charger 969350-02 (V10, V11, V15 Detect) — if it won’t charge on any outlet.

Repair or Replace Your Dyson?

Repair makes sense if:

  • clearing a blockage, washing the filter or refitting it cleared the alert
  • only the filter or battery is worn, and Dyson sells it for your model
  • it’s within Dyson’s 2-year cordless warranty: call Dyson at 1-866-693-9766

Replace makes sense if:

  • the alerts keep returning on a clean, clear machine and it’s out of warranty
  • the battery is worn and no longer sold for your model
  • suction is weak and runtime is short at the same time

FAQ

What does the blockage symbol mean on my Dyson V15?

Dyson says the blockage alert means the machine has detected a blockage. Switch off, then clear the bin, wand, tools and cleaner head before you run it again.

Why does my Dyson still show a filter alert after I washed it?

If it’s the filter attachment alert, the filter isn’t fitted correctly: refit it and turn it clockwise until it clicks. Make sure it’s completely dry first, after at least 24 hours.

Do the V11 and V15 show the same alerts?

Yes. Dyson’s support pages list the same four alerts for both: battery, blockage, filter attachment and filter wash.

What does the warning icon on my Dyson V11 battery mean?

On the V11 (SV15), Dyson’s manual describes a low run time icon when the battery needs charging, and a final warning icon when it’s empty. Charge it.

What to Do Next

Match the icon to one of Dyson’s four alerts. A blockage means clear the airway, a filter wash means wash and fully dry, an attachment alert means refit until it clicks, and a battery alert means charge. If an alert keeps coming back on a clean machine, call Dyson before you buy parts.
