The motor runs, but the brush bar in the cleaner head just sits there. Dyson says a jammed brush bar is “quite common, particularly in houses where there are pets, or people with long hair.” A Dyson brush bar not spinning is usually wrapped hair or a jam you can clear by hand, and Dyson says you can take the brush bar out to clear a stubborn one.
Quick answer: A Dyson brush bar usually stops because hair, thread or debris has jammed it. Switch off and unplug, pull the debris off gently, or remove the brush bar: a coin releases it on the V8 and V11, and an end-cap button on the Ball Animal 3. On a Ball, also check the brush bar button is on.

Safety note: Switch off and unplug your Dyson, or take a cordless model off the charger, before you touch the brush bar. Don’t pull the trigger or press the power button while your hands are in the cleaner head. Cut only the hair or thread, never the bristles.
Check These First
Ball Animal 3: is the brush bar switched on?
The Ball Animal 3 has a brush bar button on the left, next to the power button. Dyson says to turn it on for low pile carpets and off for deep pile carpets and delicate floors. If it’s off, the brush bar won’t turn. Press it and try again.
V8 Cyclone: is the light flashing orange?
On the V8 Cyclone, a flashing orange light means the tool attached isn’t compatible. Swap it for a tool made for your model.
Can you see hair at the ends?
Turn the cleaner head over and look at both ends of the brush bar. If you can see hair or thread, start with the tangle fix below.
Why Your Dyson Brush Bar Won’t Spin
Hair or thread is wrapped around it
The most common cause, and the one Dyson calls out.
How to tell: You can see hair, thread or fibers wound around the bar.
How to fix it: Dyson says most jams are “quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar.” Switch off and unplug first. Cut through tight wraps with scissors, cutting only the hair.
If that doesn’t fix it: Take the brush bar out, as below.
Something is jammed in the cleaner head
A sock, hair tie or small hard object can lock the brush bar or block the air inlet.
How to tell: It stopped right after you went over something. On a V8 Cyclone, the manual says to check the brush bar and the air inlet when you look for a blockage.
How to fix it (cordless V8 and V11):
- Switch off and take it off the charger.
- Remove the cleaner head from the wand.
- Use a coin to release the brush bar fastener. On the V8, it’s marked with a padlock.
- Slide the brush bar out and remove the obstruction.
- Slide it back in and tighten the fastener until it’s firm.
How to fix it (Ball Animal 3, Motorbar cleaner head):
- Unplug the machine.
- Press the button on the back of the cleaner head and turn the end cap 90° to release it.
- Pull out the brush bar and remove hair, thread or debris.
- Push it fully back in and turn the end cap until it locks.
Dyson says the Ball Animal 3’s Motorbar brush bar isn’t washable, so clean it by hand only.
Internal: rows DY-E-001 to E-003, DY-F-001, F-002, F-004. Remove this line before publishing.
If that doesn’t fix it: Check the wand and the cleaner head connection for debris, then try another cleaner head if you have one.
The cleaner head itself has failed
If the brush bar is clean, free and refitted, and still won’t turn, the cleaner head may be at fault.
How to tell: Nothing is tangled or jammed, and the bar turns freely by hand but not under power.
How to fix it: Don’t open the motor housing in the head. Some V11 owners on Dyson’s community forum report a brush bar that won’t spin on any head, which suggests the head isn’t always the cause. Either way, call the Dyson Helpline at 1-855-533-1098, the number in Dyson’s V8 and V11 manuals.
If that doesn’t fix it: Replace the cleaner head with the official Dyson part for your model.

Check that the part page lists your exact model before you buy. Several heads appear on more than one model’s parts page.
Parts that commonly fix this problem:
- Replacement brush bar for your cleaner head — if the bristles are worn or the bar is damaged. See the table above.
- Replacement cleaner head — if a clean, free brush bar still won’t spin under power and Dyson confirms the head is at fault. [LINK: Dyson Vacuum Parts — /dyson/dyson-vacuum-parts/]
Repair or Replace Your Dyson?
Repair makes sense if:
- clearing hair or a jam got it spinning again
- only the brush bar or cleaner head has failed, and Dyson sells it for your model
- the rest of the machine, including suction and battery, is fine
Replace makes sense if:
- the brush bar won’t spin on any cleaner head and Dyson can’t fix it under warranty
- suction is also weak with a clean filter
- several faults are showing up at once

FAQ
Why did my Dyson brush bar stop spinning?
Usually hair, thread or debris has jammed it. Dyson says this is common in homes with pets or long hair. On a Ball Animal 3, the brush bar button may also be switched off.
How do I remove the brush bar on my Dyson?
Switch off and unplug first. On the V8 and V11, use a coin to release the fastener and slide the brush bar out. On a Ball Animal 3, press the button on the back of the cleaner head, turn the end cap 90° and pull it out.
Why won’t my Dyson Ball brush bar spin?
Check the brush bar button next to the power button first. Dyson says to switch it off on deep pile carpets and delicate floors, so it may simply be off. Then check for hair or a jam.
Can I wash my Dyson brush bar?
Not on the Ball Animal 3’s Motorbar cleaner head. Dyson says it doesn’t have a washable brush bar. Clean it by hand.
The Short Answer
Unplug it, look for hair at the ends and pull it off. If it’s jammed, take the brush bar out: a coin on the V8 and V11, the end-cap button on a Ball. Check the Ball’s brush bar button too. If a clean, free brush bar still won’t turn, call Dyson before you buy a new head.
