A dirty filter is the first cause Dyson lists for poor suction, and it shows up in Dyson’s lists for pulsing and short runtime too. Dyson filter cleaning is simple, but the details change by model: how the filter comes out, whether you use cold or warm water, and how you dry it. Here’s what Dyson says for each one.
Quick answer: Wash your Dyson filter at least once a month. Tap off the dust, rinse it until the water runs clear, with no detergent, then let it dry for at least 24 hours with good airflow. Dyson warns that refitting a damp filter could damage the motor. Water temperature and removal steps differ by model.
Why the Filter Matters on a Dyson
Dyson’s support pages for the V8, Cyclone V10, V11 and V15 Detect all list a filter that needs cleaning as a cause of poor suction. The same pages list it behind a machine that pulses or cuts out, and behind short runtime. On the V11 and V15 Detect, the screen tells you directly: a filter wash alert means it needs cleaning. On a Cyclone V10, a solid filter light means the same thing. If the problem you’re chasing is weak suction or pulsing, see [LINK: Dyson Vacuum Losing Suction — /dyson/dyson-vacuum-losing-suction/] or [LINK: Dyson Vacuum Pulsing — /dyson/dyson-vacuum-pulsing/].

Safety note: Switch off your Dyson and take it off the charger (or unplug a Ball model) before you remove the filter. Never put a filter in a dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, oven or microwave, or near an open flame.
How to Wash Your Dyson Filter, Model by Model
V8
- Lift the pre-filter out of the top of the machine.
- Rotate the post-filter anti-clockwise until the two solid black dots line up, then remove it.
- Using cold water only, run water over the outside of the filters until it runs clear.
- Turn the filter upside down and shake out debris.
- Squeeze and twist the pre-filter with both hands to remove water. Tap and shake the post-filter.
- Dry with the open end facing up for as long as possible, until it’s completely dry to the touch.
- Refit the pre-filter, then rotate the post-filter clockwise until it locks and the solid black dot lines up with the empty circle.
Cyclone V10
- Twist the filter counterclockwise to the open position and pull it away.
- Remove excess debris.
- Wash the inside first: hold it upright under the cold tap and rotate it.
- Wash the outside: fill it with cold water, cover the open end with your hand and shake gently.
- Repeat until the water runs clear, then tap out excess water.
- Dry with the open end facing up for as long as possible, until it’s completely touch dry.
- Refit in the open position and twist clockwise until it clicks.
V11
- Turn the filter counterclockwise and pull it away. Tap off loose dust.
- Use cold water only, and no detergent.
- Wash the pleated paper element under the cold tap with the foam element facing down.
- Wash the foam element the same way, foam down, and squeeze it gently.
- Wash the outside, then fill the unit with cold water, cover the ends and shake gently. Repeat until the water runs clear.
- Drain it with the foam end facing up, and dry it for at least 24 hours with good airflow.
- Turn it clockwise until it clicks into place.
V15 Detect
- Turn the filter counterclockwise and pull it away. Tap off loose dust.
- Wash it under warm running tap water, rubbing gently with your fingers.
- Fill it with warm water, cover the open end and shake firmly.
- Shake out excess water and dry it for at least 24 hours with good airflow.
- Turn it clockwise until it clicks into place.
Yes, the V15 Detect page says warm water while the V11 page says cold only. Follow the page for your own model.
Ball Animal 3 (upright)
- Remove Filter A from the cyclone using the catch on the front of the bin handle.
- Remove Filter B from the ball by releasing the central lock on the filter cover.
- Rinse each filter under a cold tap until the water runs clear. No detergents.
- Squeeze out excess water.
- Dry for at least 24 hours on its side in a warm, well-ventilated place.

What Happens If You Refit It Damp
Dyson’s filter-care page is blunt: a filter “must be completely dry before you put it back into the machine, or it could damage the motor.” Do a touch test before you refit it. If you can’t wait 24 hours, a second filter lets you keep cleaning while the first one dries.
Common Filter Mistakes
- Using detergent. Dyson says not to.
- Drying with heat. No tumble dryer, microwave, oven or open flame.
- Refitting it damp. Wait at least 24 hours and touch-test it.
- Using one rule for every model. Water temperature and removal differ.
- Not seating it fully. A filter attachment alert or flashing filter light means it isn’t fitted correctly.
- Buying a filter by look alone. Match the part number to your model.

Third-party filters are sold for most Dyson models. If you consider one, make sure it names your exact model, and remember that Dyson ties a genuine filter to keeping the warranty valid.

FAQ
How often should I wash my Dyson filter?
At least once a month, according to Dyson. Wash it sooner if the filter alert or light comes on, or if you vacuum a lot of fine dust.
Can I use soap on my Dyson filter?
No. Dyson’s filter-care page and the V11 support page both say not to use detergent. Water only.
How long does a Dyson filter take to dry?
At least 24 hours with good airflow, according to Dyson. It must be completely dry before you refit it.
Do the V11 and V15 use the same filter?
Dyson’s parts pages list filter 970013-02 for both the V11 (LCD screen) and the V15 Detect. The V15 Detect also has a separate HEPA filter, 972126-01.
Why does my Dyson still say the filter needs cleaning?
If you’ve just washed it, check that it’s fully seated. On the V11 and V15, a filter attachment alert means it isn’t fitted correctly. On a Cyclone V10, a flashing filter light means the same.
Bottom Line
Wash your Dyson filter once a month, follow your own model’s steps, and give it a full 24 hours to dry before it goes back in. If it’s torn or won’t come clean, replace it with the Dyson filter listed for your model.
