Dyson Vacuum Not Turning On? Common Causes and Fixes

You pull the trigger and nothing happens. A Dyson vacuum not turning on is usually telling you something through its battery lights or screen, and Dyson publishes what each pattern means. Read the lights first, then work through the checks below.

Quick answer: A Dyson that won’t turn on usually has a flat battery, a battery or charger fault, a room that’s too cold, or a blocked airway that tripped its safety cut-out. On a V8, an unseated cyclone can also stop it. Check the lights or screen, charge it, then look for blockages.

Safety note: Take your Dyson off the charger before you remove the bin, wand or cleaner head. If the battery casing is cracked or damaged, don’t use the machine and don’t charge it. Call Dyson instead.

Three Checks Before You Take Anything Apart

Is it just too cold?

Dyson’s V8 and V11 (SV15) manuals say the machine switches off when the battery is below 50°F (10°C). They list 50°F to 86°F (10°C to 30°C) for using and charging it. The V8 Cyclone won’t run or charge below 41°F (5°C). A Dyson stored in a cold garage may simply need time in a warm room.

Are you using the right control?

The V8 and V11 run on a power trigger. The newer V8 Cyclone doesn’t: its top button turns it on and off, and the lower button changes the power mode.

On a V8: is the cyclone pushed fully down?

Dyson lists a cyclone that isn’t fitted correctly as a reason a V8 has no power. Push it fully down until it seats, then try again. On the V8 Cyclone, a flashing white light means the same thing. If that fixed it, you’re done.

Why Your Dyson Won’t Turn On

The battery has run out

The simplest cause, and Dyson’s lights make it easy to confirm.

How to tell:

  • V8 and Cyclone V10: one flashing blue light means the battery is empty and needs charging.
  • V11 and V15 Detect: a battery alert appears on the screen.

How to fix it:

  1. Charge it on the dock or at the socket.
  2. After a full discharge, let a V8 cool for a few minutes before you recharge it, as its manual advises.
  3. Give it time: the V8 manual lists about 5 hours for a full charge, and the V8 Cyclone manual about 4 hours.

If that doesn’t fix it: If no charging lights appear at all, read [LINK: Dyson Not Charging — /dyson/dyson-not-charging/].

The battery has a fault

Dyson’s light tables single out a battery fault, separate from a flat battery.

How to tell: On a V8 or Cyclone V10, one flashing red light means a battery fault.

How to fix it: Stop charging it if the casing is cracked, swollen or damaged. Dyson’s support pages list “the battery needs replacing” as a reason these models have no power, and point to batteries on Dyson.com.

If that doesn’t fix it: Replace it with the official Dyson battery for your model. See [LINK: Dyson Battery Replacement — /dyson/dyson-battery-replacement/].

The charger is faulty

If the charger fails, the battery never fills.

How to tell: On a V8 or Cyclone V10, a red light and a blue light flash together.

How to fix it:

  1. Try a different wall outlet.
  2. Check the charger cable for damage. Don’t use a damaged one.
  3. Use only the Dyson charger for your model.

If that doesn’t fix it: Dyson’s support pages list a faulty charger as a cause and sell spare chargers. Order the one for your model from Dyson.

A blockage tripped the safety cut-out

Dyson says a blocked airflow makes a cordless machine cut out for safety. To you, that can look like a dead vacuum.

How to tell: It stopped mid-clean, or it pulses for a moment before going quiet. On a V11 or V15 Detect, a blockage alert shows on the screen. On a Cyclone V10, the blockage light comes on.

How to fix it:

  1. Take it off the charger and let it cool.
  2. Don’t pull the trigger while you check.
  3. Empty the bin and check the wand and cleaner head for anything stuck.

If that doesn’t fix it: Full step-by-step blockage clearing is in [LINK: Dyson Vacuum Pulsing — /dyson/dyson-vacuum-pulsing/].

The filter needs washing (Cyclone V10)

Dyson’s Cyclone V10 support page lists a dirty filter as a reason the machine won’t power on.

How to tell: The filter light is solid on a Cyclone V10. A flashing filter light means the filter isn’t fitted correctly.

How to fix it: Wash the filter, let it dry completely, and refit it firmly. Dyson recommends washing it once a month. See [LINK: Dyson Filter Cleaning — /dyson/dyson-filter-cleaning/].

If that doesn’t fix it: Check the other causes on this page.

The main body has a fault

Some faults can’t be fixed at home.

How to tell:

  • V8 and Cyclone V10: one solid red light means a main body fault.
  • V8 Cyclone: a solid orange light means a motor fault.

How to fix it: Don’t open the machine. Dyson’s support pages say to contact customer support to organize a replacement.

If that doesn’t fix it: Call the Dyson Helpline at 1-855-533-1098 (Mon–Fri 8am–8pm CT, Sat 9am–6pm CT), the number in Dyson’s V8 and V11 manuals.

Not sure which Dyson you have? The serial number is on the rating plate: on the base of a V11, on the base or behind the clear bin on a V8, and behind the clear bin on a V8 Cyclone. For the Cyclone V10 and V15 Detect, your user manual shows where it is.

Parts that commonly fix this problem:

  • Official Dyson battery for your model — if a V8 or Cyclone V10 shows one flashing red light, or a charged battery won’t run the machine. [LINK: Dyson Battery Replacement — /dyson/dyson-battery-replacement/]
  • Official Dyson charger — if the red and blue lights flash together, or nothing charges on any outlet.
  • Dyson filter for your model — if a Cyclone V10 shows a solid filter light and washing hasn’t cleared it. [LINK: Dyson Filter Cleaning — /dyson/dyson-filter-cleaning/]

Repair or Replace Your Dyson?

Repair makes sense if:

  • the fix was a charge, a warm room, a cleared blockage or a reseated cyclone
  • only the battery or charger has failed, and Dyson sells it for your model
  • it’s still under warranty: the V11 (SV15) manual lists 2 years of parts and labor, excluding filters

Replace makes sense if:

  • it shows a main body or motor fault and it’s out of warranty
  • the battery has failed and suction had been weak for a while
  • several faults have shown up at once

FAQ

Why won’t my Dyson turn on even though it’s charged?

Check the room temperature first: the V8 and V11 (SV15) switch off below 50°F (10°C). Then check for a blockage, since a blocked airway makes a cordless Dyson cut out for safety. On a V8, make sure the cyclone is pushed fully down.

Why is my Dyson flashing red and not working?

On a V8 or Cyclone V10, one flashing red light means a battery fault. A solid red light means a main body fault, and red flashing with blue means a charger fault. All three need Dyson’s help or an official part.

Why is my Dyson trigger not working?

If the V8 or V11 gives no response when you pull the trigger, the cause is usually upstream: a flat or faulty battery, a cold battery, or a blockage cut-out. Work through the lights above. If everything checks out, call Dyson. Don’t open the handle.

Where is the serial number on my Dyson?

It’s on the rating plate: on the base of the V11, on the base or behind the clear bin on the V8, and behind the clear bin on the V8 Cyclone.

What to Do Next

Start with the lights. They tell you whether it’s charge, battery, charger or the main body. Warm it up, charge it and clear any blockage before you spend anything. If a red or orange fault light stays on, call Dyson at 1-855-533-1098 before you buy a part.
