Most Dyson problems people search for, like weak suction, pulsing and short runtime, appear on Dyson’s own list of causes as a dirty filter, a dusty cyclone or clogged tools. Knowing how to clean a Dyson vacuum properly fixes or prevents a lot of them. The key is knowing which parts can get wet and which can’t.
Quick answer: Empty the bin at the MAX line, wipe the clear bin with a damp cloth only, and brush the cyclone shroud with the combination tool. Never put the cyclone under water. Wash the filter once a month and let it dry for at least 24 hours. Clear hair from the brush bar and wipe the tools with a microfiber cloth.
Why a Clean Dyson Works Better
Dyson’s support pages for the V8, Cyclone V10, V11 and V15 Detect list the same handful of causes for poor suction: the filter, the power mode, the tools and, on the V10, V11 and V15 Detect, the cyclone. Three of those four are cleaning jobs. The same causes show up behind pulsing and short runtime.
How Often to Clean Each Part
| Part | When | What Dyson says |
|---|---|---|
| Bin | Every time dirt reaches MAX | “Empty your bin once whenever it reaches the MAX fill line.” On a Ball Animal 3, MAX is about halfway up the bin |
| Filter | At least once a month | More often if you vacuum a lot of fine dust |
| Cyclone | When it’s dusty or suction drops | Clean with a microfiber cloth |
| Tools | When they’re dirty or blocked | Clean with a microfiber cloth and remove blockages |
| Brush bar | When hair or thread wraps it | Pull debris off gently, or remove the brush bar |

Safety note: Switch off your Dyson and take it off the charger before you clean it. Unplug a corded Ball model. Don’t pull the trigger or press the power button while the bin is open or your hands are near the brush bar.
How to Clean Your Dyson, Part by Part
1. Empty and clean the clear bin
- Empty the bin before dirt passes the MAX line.
- Remove the bin. On a V8, pull the red lever back and lift to release the cyclone, then press the red bin release catch at the rear. On a Cyclone V10, open the bin base and press the red button on the bin runner to slide the bin off.
- Wipe the clear bin with a damp cloth only. Don’t use detergents, polishes or air fresheners, and don’t put it in the dishwasher.
- Make sure the bin and its seals are completely dry before you refit it.
2. Clean the cyclone (without water)
- Brush lint and dust off the cyclone shroud with the brush on the combination tool.
- Wipe it with a microfiber cloth, as Dyson’s support pages suggest.
- Don’t immerse the cyclone unit in water or pour water into the cyclones. Dyson’s support pages are explicit about this.
3. Wash the filter
Dyson suggests at least once a month. Tap off loose dust, rinse until the water runs clear, shake out the water, and dry it for at least 24 hours somewhere with plenty of airflow. Dyson warns that a filter must be completely dry before it goes back in, or it could damage the motor.
Each model has its own steps and water instructions. See [LINK: Dyson Filter Cleaning — /dyson/dyson-filter-cleaning/].
4. Clean the tools and wand
Wipe the tools with a microfiber cloth and clear anything stuck inside. Look through both ends of the wand for blockages.
5. Clear the brush bar
Dyson says a jammed brush bar is “quite common, particularly in houses where there are pets, or people with long hair.”
- Switch off and unplug first.
- Gently pull hair and debris off the brush bar.
- For a stubborn jam, remove the brush bar. On the V8 and V11, use a coin to release the fastener, then slide the brush bar out. On a Ball Animal 3, press the button on the back of the cleaner head, turn the end cap 90° and pull the brush bar out.
- Refit it fully and lock the fastener or end cap.
The Ball Animal 3’s Motorbar brush bar isn’t washable, so clean it by hand only.

Ball Animal 3 (Upright) Notes
- Empty the bin as soon as dirt reaches MAX, about halfway up.
- It has two filters: Filter A in the cyclone and Filter B in the ball. Wash both at least once a month in cold water, with no detergent, and dry them for at least 24 hours.
- If anything blocks the airflow, the machine may cut out. Unplug it and let it cool before you check the wand, hose and cleaner head.
What Happens If You Skip It
Dyson’s support pages tie a dirty filter, cyclone or tools to weak suction, a machine that pulses or cuts out, and short battery runtime. Before you buy a part for any of those, a full clean is the first fix to try. Mistakes That Can Damage Your Dyson
- Rinsing the cyclone. Dyson says not to immerse it or pour water into the cyclones.
- Putting the bin in the dishwasher. Damp cloth only.
- Using detergent, polish or air freshener on the bin or filter.
- Refitting a damp filter. Dyson says it could damage the motor. Touch-test it first.
- Drying a filter with heat. No tumble dryer, microwave or open flame.
- Washing the Ball Animal 3’s Motorbar brush bar. Dyson says it isn’t washable.
When Cleaning Isn’t Enough
If a part is worn or damaged, replace it with the Dyson part for your model. Dyson says a genuine filter keeps the machine working as intended and the warranty valid.
Parts worth having on hand:
- A spare Dyson filter for your model — useful while the washed one dries for at least 24 hours. [LINK: Dyson Filter Cleaning — /dyson/dyson-filter-cleaning/]
- A Dyson brush bar or cleaner head — if the bristles are worn or the brush bar is damaged. [LINK: Dyson Vacuum Parts — /dyson/dyson-vacuum-parts/]
FAQ
Can I wash the Dyson cyclone with water?
No. Dyson’s support pages say not to immerse the cyclone unit in water or pour water into the cyclones. Brush the shroud with the combination tool and wipe it with a microfiber cloth.
Can I put my Dyson bin in the dishwasher?
No. Dyson says to clean the clear bin with a damp cloth only, without detergents, and to let it dry completely before refitting.
How often should I clean my Dyson?
Empty the bin whenever it reaches MAX, and wash the filter at least once a month. Clean the cyclone, tools and brush bar whenever they look dusty or tangled.
How do I get hair out of a Dyson brush bar?
Switch off and unplug, then pull the hair off gently. If it’s wound tight, remove the brush bar: a coin releases it on the V8 and V11, and an end-cap button releases it on the Ball Animal 3.
Bottom Line
Bin at MAX, cyclone dry-brushed, filter washed monthly and fully dried, brush bar clear. That routine covers most of the causes Dyson lists for weak suction and pulsing, and it costs nothing. Replace parts only when cleaning stops working.
